Video-Gaming for a Good Cause
ADELAIDE, AUSTRALIA - June 28th, 2013 - Commencing Thursday, July 12, gamers in Adelaide, Australia will host a video-game marathon fundraiser for charity: water. Since late 2010, the group has raised more than $44,000 for various charities.
The multi-day charity drive, titled the Worst Marathon Ever II, will be broadcast live online. Over a duration of 72 hours, several players will take shifts to complete a selection of the worst video-games ever released. Much amusement can be drawn from the poor quality of these games, but many of them are seemingly impossible to complete. “It won’t be so fun to play,” says Toby Zerner, Event Coordinator, “but it’ll certainly be fun to watch.” Throughout the show, viewers will be able to connect with the team through the event’s website and social media channels such as Facebook and Twitter. The original Worst Marathon Ever event in 2011 raised over $10,000 and featured sing-a-longs, contests and raffles.
All donations solicited will go directly to charity: water (www.charitywater.org), a non-profit organisation working to provide clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. The charity’s website explains: “Almost a billion people on the planet don’t have access to clean drinking water. Unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation cause 80% of all disease and kill more people than all forms of violence, including war.”
The student-run group GameToAid has raised over $44,000 for various charities in the past three years, and have had a total of 5.3 million viewers. “Itʼs a great way to bring gamers together to give back to the community," said Brodie Syrus, GameToAid co- founder, "and to use video games for a good cause.”
